Trata-se de assunto de difícil definição tendo em vista, principalmente, a falta de tradição de cobrança de serviços de biblioteca, reforçado pelo fato da maior parte das bibliotecas universitárias estarem ligadas a Universidades públicas que, normalmente, não cobram pelos serviços prestados à comunidade. Mas, levando-se em consideração a redução sistemática de recursos para manutenção e ampliação das atividades das bibliotecas, é de salutar importância a definição de custos de serviços para uma posterior política de preços. Os procedimentos adotados para realização do estudo foram: revisão bibliográfica da literatura nacional, consulta a literatura internacional disponível e diagnóstico dos serviços oferecidos pelas bibliotecas da USP. Com auxílio da assessoria, definiu-se uma fórmula para cálculo de custo aplicando-a ao levantamento bibliográfico em CD-ROM para teste. Mediante os resultados a serem obtidos, essa fórmula poderá ser aplicada para definição de custo de outros serviços de apoio à pesquisa disponíveis nas bibliotecas da USP e instituições congêneres.
